Efficacy Screening Tests
As part of its efficacy and safety pharmacology service offering, Covance offers primary and secondary pharmacodynamics studies to establish the efficacy of your compound.
Both primary and secondary screening studies provide data that predict the therapeutic potential of new drug candidates early in the development process. Primary screening studies are generally simple in design, using a single administration of one dose level of the test article. This approach enables a relatively large number of compounds to be screened while remaining effective at detecting a wide range of pharmacological activity. Primary screening allows compounds demonstrating toxicity or lacking efficacy to be rejected earlier on in the development process.
Secondary screening studies are typically performed following primary screening. At this stage, the therapeutic area has been targeted and a smaller number of select compounds require additional screening. Secondary screening study designs are generally more complex than primary screening studies. This allows for the evaluation of threshold effects and for the determination of dose-response relationships. There may be repeat dosing of the test article, and group sizes may be increased in order to allow for statistical analysis of the difference between test agent and control groups.
