Ecotoxicology
Covance offers a wide range of ecotoxicology studies to identify the effects of chemicals on non-target organisms. This enables an effective environmental hazard assessment to be made.
Ecotoxicology studies on the toxicity of agrochemicals to aquatic and terrestrial organisms, including fish, invertebrates, plants and birds are outlined in Annex II (active substances) and Annex III (formulated products) of European Community Directive 91/414/EEC.
United States EPA FIFRA Pesticide Assessment Guidelines require a similar range of ecotoxicology studies. Where required, combined protocols can be offered to comply with both regulatory systems.
For larger, more complex studies such as aquatic (e.g. mesocosms) and terrestrial outdoor studies, Covance will discuss study protocols with appropriate regulators and can conduct both field and laboratory phases.
Covance provides a complete service for determining the environmental effects of agrochemicals, thus enabling a hazard classification to be made, including allocation of suitable risk and safety phases during preparation of regulatory dossiers.
Studies offered include:
- Aquatic Primary Producers
- Aquatic Invertebrates
- Experimental pond studies (mesocosm, microcosm)
- Fish Toxicology
- Biodegradation.
