For centuries, people have used herbs and other botanicals for their healthful effects and in recent years, the use of these products has experienced an atmospheric rise in popularity among consumers. This has resulted in corresponding regulatory initiatives and the accelerated need for analytical methods for botanical products. Covance has been actively involved in the development and validation of assays to confirm the identity of the compounds of interest and assure that they are not adulterated or contaminated with pesticide residues or other impurities. Although researchers have been hampered by issues such as the lack of reference standards and a dearth of collaborative data, Covance has focused the efforts of significant resources on assuring we can provide accurate and regulatory compliant data for the labeling of all currently significant compounds. Several regulatory initiatives, including proposed changes to the Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), address the issue of appropriate testing requirements for botanical ingredients. Covance has the expertise and resources necessary to generate the data required to meet evolving regulatory mandates and fickle consumer attitudes.
